Kevin Kostibos

Position: Head Coach

Coach Kevin Kostibos has been the Head Football Coach at Summit High School since 2013, taking over for John Liberato. In his first season as HFC, the HIlltoppers went 12-0 and claimed the North 2, Group 3 State Championship. For the efforts of the program and staff, Coach Kostibos was awarded the NJFCA State Coach of the Year Award, US Marines Semper Fi NJ Coach of the Year Award, and the Star-Ledger Union County Coach of the Year Award.

Since then, Coach Kostibos has been selected to serve on the Phil Simms North/South All-Star Game Executive Board and is a member of the New Jersey Football Coaches Association.

Coach Kostibos teaches 8th Grade Social Studies at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School and also serves as the JV Volleyball Coach.

Justin Lucas

Position: Secondary
Experience: 10 years
 Coach Lucas comes to Summit from Texas, considered by most as the “hotbed” of High School football. After finishing a successful playing career at Abilene Christian University and graduating with honors, Coach Lucas embarked on a six year NFL career spending his first 5 seasons with the Arizona Cardinals and finishing his career with the St. Louis Rams.
Once he wrapped up his playing career, Coach Lucas returned to his alma mater, Abilene Christian, where he volunteered his coaching skills during the teams two a day practices. He since has coached at Corpus Christi High School, as the Special Teams Coordinator and West Mesquite HS, as the Defensive Coordinator.  Coach Lucas will now bring his extensive experience as a professional player and coach to the Hilltopper program.
Coach Lucas currently teaches Mathematics at Summit High School

Drew Nichols

Position: Wide Receivers
Experience: 10 years
Entering his 10th season on staff, he arrived during the tenure of head coach John Liberato to coach Wide Receivers and Defensive Backs. Has now taken on more of a roll focused on the offensive side of the ball for Coach Kostibos coaching Wide Receivers and has been part of 3 State Championships.
Coach Nichols is a former Hilltoppers himself and has been involved in not only coaching the high School team but has served as a head youth coach as well.

Tim Simo

Position: Special Teams Coordinator
Experience: 12 years
Entering his 10th season as part of the Summit Hilltopper’s Football Program, he came to Summit the same year John Liberato became head coach in 2006.  He coached defensive backs and wide receivers, but recently made the move to Special Teams Coordinator when Kevin Kostibos became the Head Coach.
Before Summit, he coached at New Providence High School, where he graduated from in 1999. Coach Simo has four children, Sienna, Brady, Saylor, and his newest addition, Chase, was born last September on Friday Night Lights, a 30-13 win against cross-town rival, GL!
Coach Simo teaches 5th grade elementary school in the Irvington Public School District and also serves as the JV softball and freshman boys basketball coach.

Dan Gregory

Position: Defensive Coordinator / LB’s
Experience:  27 Years
Coach Gregory arrived at Summit in 2015 with a wealth of knowledge from his over 25 year coaching career. As the defensive coordinator of the Hilltoppers, he instils a toughness and relentlessness that is infectious to his players. Over his 25 year career, Dan has served as the defensive coordinator for the Boonton, Manville, and Hanover Park football programs before taking over as head coach for Hanover Park from 2003-2009.
Dan currently teaches English in the Hanover Park School District and also is a track official in the spring.

Rick Carbone

Position: Offensive/Defensive Line Coach

Experience: 18 Years

A Summit New Jersey native, Rick Carbone is in his 18th season with the Summit High School Football program. Staring as a Scout in 1993, Rick has held various roles over his 18 years with the program with the last 10 working with the offensive and defensive line. In his 18 years with the program Carbone has been part of many conference championship teams, 5 State Championship teams and had the opportunity to coach in the 2015 North/South Allstar game and the 2013 Snapple Bowl.

Growing up in Summit Rick came through the Summit Youth Football program and then went on to play 4 years for the maroon and white  under the leadership of Coach Howie Anderson. After high school he played 1 year at Kean University where a knee injury ended his playing days. Wanting to give back to the community Carbone began coaching youth football in Summit where he remained for 36 years the last 12 as the League Director.

Rick graduated from Kean University with a degree in Management Science and continues to reside in Summit. Rick serves as the VP of North American Sales for Egenera Corp.


Phil Shyposh

Position: Head of Scouting
Experience: 27 years
Phil Shyposh has served as the head scout for the Hilltoppers over the last 15 years. Phil has also coached the Summit freshman team in 2000 and was intricate in the Summit youth program for over the last decade. Phil has had the pleasure of watching both of his grandsons come through the Hilltopper program as his first grandson, Chris (Class ’15), graduated as Summit’s all-time leading rusher and Sam (Class of ’17) is currently entering his senior season.

Gil Owren

Position: Quarterback Coach
Experience: 8 years
Coach Gil Owren, a 1958 Graduate of Summit High School, played football, basketball and baseball at SHS. He continued his football career as a four year starter at Middlebury College followed by law school at Seton Hall University. He then served in the United States Marine Corps.
Shortly after establishing his law practice in Summit, Gil began fifty years as a volunteer in the Summit Football Program. For Many years he was a coach in the Summit Youth Football Program and in 1988 Joined the varsity staff under coach Jim Benedict.
For the past eight seasons Gil has served as quarterback coach. He resides with his wife, Fran in Summit. They have two children and five grandchildren.
